Pakistan: U.S. drones kill 957 civilian Pakistanis in 2010

ISLAMABAD: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan issued its annual report on Thursday stating that American Drone strikes killed 957 innocent people in Pakistan in 2010.

The reports by Pakistan's leading human rights group which focuses on human rights violations in the country also laid an emphasis on terror attacks in 2010.

According to overall figures, different kind of terrorist attacks left 2,542 people dead and 5,062 others injured. While regarding "target killings" the country's southern coastal city of Karachi saw the killing of 237 political activists while in southwestern province of Balochistan figures remained at 118 killings.

According to the report, at least 1,159 people including 1,041 civilians lost their lives in 67 suicide bomb attacks.

It said that at least 12,580 people were killed in different incidents during 2010 including 791 honor killings while 581 were kidnapped for ransom.

The report, having year's statistics derived largely from media and other undisclosed sources, criticized the government for its failure to protect its citizens, especially religious minorities.

The report also highlights the biggest terrorist incident at the worship place of a religious minority which left 99 members of the Ahmadi sect dead last year in the country's eastern city of Lahore.

It described that the state-run security agencies often violate citizens' rights while beating them for nothing and shooting them in extra-judicial killings.

Reportedly, 338 people were killed in police encounters and only 28 "suspects" were injured and captured alive, the report said, adding that at least 174 people were rescued from illegal police detention.

Commission officials, in the report, urged political parties and leaders to work together to improve human rights instead of playing power games only for their own.
